Specialist sport & exercise medicine · Cambridge, Waikato
Get back to the things your body is for.
We are a specialist medical clinic for injuries, joint pain and anything that stops you moving well. You see a Sport and Exercise Physician or a registrar working under one. If your problem is an injury with an ACC claim, ACC contributes to the cost of your care.
What we treat
Sport and exercise medicine is the specialty for musculoskeletal problems that do not need a surgeon. We diagnose, treat and plan your recovery, and refer on only when that is the right answer.
Sprains, strains, muscle tears, fractures that do not need surgery, and injuries that are not settling the way they should.
Knee, hip, shoulder, ankle and spine problems, including osteoarthritis and tendon pain that has been going on for months.
Assessment after a head knock, symptom management, and a graded return to school, work and sport.
Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections (fully funded by ACC for accepted injury claims — see below) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for joints and tendons, done in the clinic.
Extracorporeal shockwave for stubborn injuries such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles and gluteal tendinopathy.
Structured rehabilitation plans and clearance decisions for athletes at every level, from club to high performance.
We arrange X-ray, ultrasound and MRI where it changes the plan, and refer directly to orthopaedics, radiology and allied health.
Help using exercise safely for weight, metabolic health, bone health and recovery after illness.
Independent medical and impairment assessments for ACC and insurers, by arrangement.
ACC-funded priority injection clinic
If you have an accepted ACC claim for your injury, an ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection in our Thursday morning priority injection clinic is fully funded by ACC. There is no surcharge to pay, and the wait list is minimal.
Your visit & ACC
If you are paying privately, you do not need a referral — you can book directly into the registrar clinic. If you want ACC or your private health insurer to contribute to the cost, you need a referral from your GP, physiotherapist or another health professional. Ask them to send their notes and any imaging so we have the full picture.
If your problem started with an accident, ACC contributes to the cost of your care. Bring your ACC claim number if you have one. If a claim has not been lodged, we can lodge it at your appointment.
Initial consultations run about 30 minutes. You will be examined and leave with a diagnosis and a written plan. Wear clothing that lets us see the area.
Injections, shockwave and rehab reviews are booked as follow-ups. We copy your GP on every consultation unless you ask us not to.
If your problem is an injury with an accepted ACC claim, ACC pays a contribution towards each consultation and you pay a surcharge on the day. Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections for accepted ACC claims are fully funded, with no surcharge. Non-injury consultations, PRP injections and some other treatments are private and are not funded by ACC.
Reception will tell you the fee for your appointment when you book. Fees are payable on the day by EFTPOS or card. If you need to cancel or move an appointment, please let us know as early as you can so the time can be offered to someone else.

For GPs, physiotherapists and other referrers
We accept referrals from any health professional. A referral is required for ACC-funded and insurer-funded appointments; private patients may self-refer to the registrar clinic. New patients are usually offered a registrar clinic appointment first, with specialist review as needed.
Contact
Appointments are by booking. Clinic days vary by doctor, so phone or email reception for the next available time. If ACC or your insurer is paying, ask your GP or physiotherapist to send a referral first.
In an emergency call 111. For after-hours injuries, Cambridge and Hamilton have accident and medical clinics open outside our hours.
